Short answer: No medical condition automatically qualifies you for Social Security disability in New York. To be approved for SSDI or SSI, your condition must be expected to last at least 12 months (or result in death) and keep you from earning more than $1,690 a month in 2026. Conditions listed in Social Security’s “Blue Book” (the Listing of Impairments) are the closest thing to automatic approval, and more than 300 severe conditions on the Compassionate Allowances list are fast-tracked.
This article covers federal Social Security disability. If you were hurt off the job and need short-term income, see New York’s short-term disability benefits in How Long Can You Be on Disability in New York? If you were hurt at work, start with Workers’ Compensation.
The following medical conditions are included in the Blue Book list:
New York residents may still be eligible for SSDI benefits even if their illness or condition is not on the “Listing of Impairments.” As long as the condition is substantiated by medical and clinical reports and limits your residual functional capacity (RFC) thus impairing your ability to work, you may still qualify for disability benefits.
You can still qualify. Social Security looks at your “residual functional capacity,” meaning what you can still do despite your conditions, combined with your age, education and work history. Many approved New York claims are for back injuries, joint conditions or combinations of conditions that don’t match a single listing.

Only a limited amount. In 2026, earning over $1,690 a month generally means Social Security considers you able to work.
Yes. Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD and other mental disorders are in the Blue Book, if they are well documented and seriously limit your ability to work.
No. Social Security disability (SSDI/SSI) is federal and long-term. New York State disability (DBL) is a short-term benefit of up to 26 weeks for off-the-job injuries or illness, paid through your employer’s insurer.
